How to Play Jhabbu

Jhabbu is a fast, social Indian card game where you follow the led suit and try to empty your hand before everyone else. It is widely known as Bhabho, Bhabhi, Laad and Get Away. Watch out for the Thulla — the off-suit card that drops the whole pile on one player.

Players and time

Best with 3 to 6 players and a single standard 52-card deck. A game runs about 15 to 30 minutes. It is easy to pick up in one round and rewards watching what everyone else discards.

Deck and setup

Deal the whole deck out as evenly as possible; some players may hold one extra card. There are no teams. The player holding the Ace of Spades opens the very first trick.

Objective

Empty your hand as fast as you can. Players who run out of cards get away and are safe. The one player still holding cards when everyone else is empty loses the round and is the Bhabhi.

How a turn works

The lead player lays a card and everyone in turn must follow the led suit if they hold it. If every card follows suit, the highest card wins the trick and leads next. The pile is only picked up when a Thulla is thrown — otherwise the cards are cleared and play continues.

Ending the round and scoring

The round ends when only one player still holds cards. That player is the Bhabhi for the round. Classic play keeps no score — families just note who was left holding the cards. If you prefer, give the last player one point per round and the lowest total wins.
